So your gutters broke, and you’re wondering if your homeowners policy will cover the costs. The answer? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on how they broke.
When They Will Cover It: Acts of God
If your gutters were damaged by a bad storm, then chances are that you’d be covered. In addition to rain, sleet, hail, snow, and lightning, your homeowners policy should cover fire, falling objects (like trees) and vandalism too.
When They Won’t Cover It: They’re Old or It’s Your Fault
Most insurance policies operate on a break-fix model. That means they’ll only cover things that break as a result of some outside factor. Homeowners insurance will not cover gutters that failed due to old age. In addition, there are situations when you could be found at fault. In those cases, you won’t be covered. Examples? If a ladder falls on your gutters, it could be determined that the gutters broke due to your own negligence. Similarly, if an old tree broke your gutters, it could be determined that you neglected to trim its branches back. In such a scenario, you may not be covered.
