Choosing the Perfect Awning Fabric: Material Options for Your Outdoor Space

When creating attractive outdoor spaces, many homeowners and businesses choose awnings. They provide shade when sitting outside or entertaining. They block harmful UV rays from getting into the home or business. They offer some rain protection in inclement weather and can raise the resale value of a house or building.

However, awnings are more than functionality; they also make a home more attractive and provide a “finished” feel. Many awning companies allow property owners to choose a fabric for their awnings. But it can be hard to know what to choose, and what’s right for one home or building may not be right for another. Geographic location plays a big role in what types of fabric to pick.

Cotton canvas. Canvas is a classic awning fabric, particularly for homes. Canvas is eco-friendly, and traditional and comes in various attractive patterns and colors. One of the biggest downsides of canvas, however, is durability. Increasingly, property owners are choosing more durable synthetic materials for awnings to ensure they last longer. Cotton canvas awnings can also be challenging to clean.

Vinyl-laminated polyester. Because vinyl-laminated polyester is highly resistant to mold and mildew, it’s often a first-choice material for areas that experience very high humidity. In addition, the material is ideal for filtering out UV rays, so it’s a good choice for hot and humid climates.

Acrylic-coated polyester. Acrylic-coated polyester is an excellent choice for awnings because of its durability. The material is resistant to stretching (unlike canvas and some other synthetic materials) and can withstand some mistreatment by the weather. They are ideal for regions that experience heavy rainfall, as coated polyester is generally waterproof. However, one of the downsides of acrylic-coated polyester is that it is highly prone to fading.

Pure acrylic. 100 percent acrylic is increasingly the choice for awnings for business premises. These awnings are formed of liquid acrylic that has already been dyed before being woven, so the material is highly resistant to color fading. Acrylic is resistant to rotting, mildewing, and fading, so it often comes with a long warranty of up to 10 years.

Woven polyester coated with PVC. The PVC coating in these awnings makes them highly resistant to UV rays, mold, and mildew, making them a great choice for hot and humid climates. One of the other major benefits of PVC-coated woven polyester awnings is that they are easy to clean.
