Cleaning Your Vinyl Windows

vinyl windows on new home

Vinyl windows are energy-efficient, durable, and long-lasting. Like any part of your home, vinyl windows will need cleaning from time to time. Fortunately, for owners of vinyl replacement windows, the process is generally simple and requires a minimal amount of time.

Steps to Clean Your Vinyl Windows

Check the glass, frame, and sash for damage. If possible, take out the window frames and sashes and set them on a flat surface. That will make it easier to clean the windows.

Rinse the vinyl window frames and trim with water. Then use a solution of mild soap and water and a soft brush or sponge to scrub the frames. As soon as you finish scrubbing a frame, rinse it with water and dry it with a lint-free cloth to prevent water from collecting at the bottom of the window and causing damage.

If a window isn’t particularly dirty, start by cleaning the glass with water and a soft cloth or sponge. Get rid of as much dirt and grime as possible, then dry the glass with a clean, soft cloth.

Next, clean the glass with a solution that contains 10% to 20% vinegar. You can also use a commercial glass cleaner, but a cleaner with vinegar is less likely to leave streaks and a residue. Wipe the glass with a clean cloth or sponge, then dry it with a clean cloth or squeegee.

If you use a rubber squeegee, be careful so you don’t leave streaks. If the glass is very dirty, there might be streaks after you clean it. In that case, clean the glass again.

For caked-on grime and stubborn stains, spot clean with a mixture of mild soap and water, a household cleaner, denatured alcohol, or isopropyl alcohol. Avoid using a soap or detergent that contains organic solvents, a liquid grease remover, nail polish remover, or a cleaner with bleach. Don’t use a scraper to get rid of stuck-on dirt because that can damage the glass. Once you have spot cleaned particularly dirty areas, clean the entire glass surface according to the instructions above.

To clean the window screens, place them in a bathtub or on the lawn and spray them with water. Use a soft-bristled brush and a mild detergent solution to scrub away dirt, then rinse the screens with water and let them air dry. Don’t use a pressure washer on window screens because that can cause damage.

Before you return the sashes and screens to the windows, clean the tracks. A vacuum can remove most debris. You can use a putty knife and a mild detergent solution to get rid of additional dirt and grime. Let the tracks dry, then lubricate them with a silicone spray, wipe with a cloth, and replace the screens and sashes.
