Energy-efficient Upgrades for Your Home

Summer is here, and it’s predicted to be a hot one. Excessive summer heat can make it difficult to enjoy your home as you would wish. Luckily, there are some things you can do to cool your home down that don’t involve cranking up the air conditioning and remaining a hermit until September.

Summer is a great time to make energy-efficient upgrades to your home, as you’ll reap the benefits of these changes immediately, and you’ll be prepared for the winter cold when it arrives, as many of the same improvements that protect against summer heat also protect against the cold.

Following are some ways you can boost your enjoyment of your home during both the hot summer and the cold winter.

Consider a door canopy. Door canopies shelters are a simple way to protect your home from excessive heat (as well as cold, rain and snow in colder months) while simultaneously improving your home’s appearance. They can be erected quickly to protect your front entryway from heat and damaging UV rays from the sun. In the hot summer, shading your front door may actually keep your home cooler and reduce your need for air conditioning. Your entryway will remain cleaner, brighter and more welcoming.

Add functional shutters. While your home may have decorative shutters, it’s important to remember that shutters were once extremely useful for keeping a house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. If your home is in a place with hot summers and cold winters, you could benefit from functional shutters that are designed to protect windows, French doors, skylights and any other vulnerable opening to the home from excessive summer heat or winter cold.

Replace your windows with low-e glass. Low-e, or low-emissivity, glass was created to minimize temperature transference through windows. It’s designed to reduce the amount of infrared and ultraviolet light that comes through your home’s window glass without minimizing the amount of light that enters. E-glass is coated with a microscopically thin layer that reflects heat. This is particularly useful during the summer months when the sun is hot and most of the energy that comes through your window is in the form of heat. In the winter, the glass can protect against heat loss.

Add retractable awnings. To get more use out of your deck or patio regardless of the weather, consider installing retractable awnings.  These functional and decorative awnings protect against heat and rain and offer UV protection against the hot summer sun.
