Preparing Your Retractable Awning for Winter

Your retractable awning is designed to provide you with shade during the warmer months so you can enjoy spending time out on your patio with family and friends. In the winter, however, your awning can get damaged by snow, ice, and wind.

Leaving your fabric awning exposed to the elements during the winter can shorten its lifespan, and moisture from snow and ice can cause the frame and joints to rust. Taking some simple steps before the weather turns too harsh can protect your awning from damage so you will be able to enjoy it for many more seasons.

Clean and Inspect the Awning

You’ll need to give your awning a good cleaning to get it ready for winter. Choose a relatively warm and sunny day.

Don’t try to extend or retract your awning if it’s covered with frost. That could damage the fabric and the motor. Let the frost melt before you open the awning for cleaning.

Use a brush to wipe off any loose dirt, pollen, leaves, and other debris. If there is any stuck-on dirt and grime, dilute dish soap with water and scrub the fabric with a soft-bristled brush or washcloth. Don’t use any sort of abrasive cleaner to remove stains because it can damage the fabric. Remember to clean the valance and wipe down the frame. Let the fabric air dry completely.

While you’re scrubbing the fabric, check for holes or tears. If you notice any damage, repair it before you store the awning for the winter so it will be in good shape and ready to go when you want to use it again in the spring.

Put Your Fabric Awning into Storage for the Winter

It’s a good idea to take your awning down for the winter since Connecticut often gets heavy snowfalls. The weight of snow can damage the awning’s fabric, as well as the frame. Heavy snow can even make an awning become detached from the house. If your awning falls, it can cause damage to another part of your home.

The best way to make sure that your awning will be protected from Connecticut’s winter weather is to remove the fabric and store it in a safe and dry location, such as your garage or shed. Make sure it’s completely dry before you fold it up and put it away. If you store a damp awning, you may find it covered with mold and mildew in the spring.
