Spring Window Cleaning How-To

window cleaning

You may be thinking about tackling some home cleaning projects. Windows can get covered with dirt and grime, and early spring is an excellent time to give them a good scrubbing so you will be able to enjoy the spring sunshine. Cleaning windows isn’t that difficult, but it’s important to use the right materials and methods.

Consider Taking out the Sashes and Screens

Before you start cleaning windows, you may want to remove the sashes and screens. If so, have someone help you so you don’t accidentally damage them. Clean the screens in the bathtub or on the lawn with a stream of water from a faucet or hose (not a power washer) and a soft-bristled brush. Then rinse the screens and let them air dry.

How to Clean Windows on the Outside

Spray the glass and the window frames with a hose to remove dirt, pollen, and other debris. That should get rid of the bulk of the grime so you will have a limited amount of scrubbing to do. Make a cleaning solution consisting of either 1 ½ cups of distilled white vinegar and a gallon of water or a teaspoon of dish soap and a gallon of water.

Use a sponge, lint-free cloth, or soft-bristled brush to remove any stuck-on dirt and grime from the glass and the frames. Using newspaper on glass can help you avoid streaks. Once you have finished cleaning the windows, rinse them and dry them with a lint-free cloth to prevent water from pooling and causing damage.

How to Clean Windows Inside the House

As you did on the outside, you should start by removing as much debris as possible. On the inside, use a vacuum to get rid of dirt and dust. Use the same solution that you used outside to clean the interior of the windows. You can use a soft-bristled brush if you encounter any tough stains that you can’t remove with a cloth or sponge. Be sure to give the window tracks a thorough cleaning to get rid of any debris that could make it difficult to open and close the windows.

Inspect Your Windows While You Clean Them

When you clean your windows, look for any signs of damage, such as cracked or warped areas. If you notice a problem, it may be time to replace the windows. Damage can allow cold air to enter your house in the winter and let cooled air escape in the summer, which can lead to high heating and cooling bills.
