3 Things You Should Do to Prepare for New Home Windows

To prepare for window replacement, do three things before the crew arrives: clear space around every window inside and out, cover your belongings, and arrange for children and pets to be somewhere else. A little preparation lets the installers get right to work and keeps your home and family protected.

You may be excited about your new windows, or a little nervous about having work done in the house. Knowing what to expect helps the vinyl window replacement go smoothly for everyone.

1. Give the Installers Room to Work

Window installers need space both inside and outside the house.

Inside, move furniture away from the windows that are being replaced. Take down curtains, blinds and shades. Remove artwork, mirrors and anything fragile from nearby walls and sills so it does not get damaged.

Outside, move patio furniture, landscaping tools, children’s toys and anything else that could get in the way. Make sure there is a clear path to each window.

Do all of this before the installers arrive so they can start as soon as they get there.

2. Cover Your Belongings

Removing old windows stirs up dust. There is also a short period, after an old window comes out and before the new one goes in, when the inside of your home is open to the outdoors. Rain, dirt, pine needles and other debris can blow in.

Cover furniture, electronics and anything else that has to stay in the room with plastic sheets or cloth. It takes a few minutes and makes cleanup much easier.

3. Find a Safe Place for Kids and Pets

Children and animals may be curious about what the workers are doing, or frightened by the noise. It is best not to have them around during the work. They will not be in the crew’s way, and you will not have to worry about accidents, injuries or a pet slipping out through an open window.

Arrange for children and pets to stay with family or friends, or plan an outing to a park or another spot where you can relax while the work is done.

Other Ways to Prepare for Window Replacement

A few smaller steps help too. Ask your installer ahead of time what time the crew will arrive and how long the job is expected to take. If your windows have alarm sensors, contact your security company about disconnecting them before installation day. Decide where the crew can park and which door they should use.

If you are also having an entry door or patio door replaced, clear the area around it the same way.
