It’s spring, which means warmer weather, more daylight, and green grass and gardens. As a result, homeowners will begin to spend more time outdoors. In advance of this, many property owners will take the time to improve their outdoor living space. This may result in increased backyard landscaping, house painting, gardening and even remodeling the exterior of the home to build a place for family relaxation and wellness.

But what’s popular this year when it comes to improving outdoor living spaces? According to Yardzen’s recently released 2023 Outdoor Living Trends, an annual trend report that compiles trend data from homeowner requests and insights, homeowners are focusing on a theme of “backyard bliss” for 2023.

“A throughline in many of these trends is a fundamental shift in outdoor style – the clean lines of modernism give way to organic textures and forms, heavy on habitat-supporting and pollinator-loving plants and trees,” wrote the report’s authors. “This is good for the planet and good for the psyche – the emerging field of ‘green care’ demonstrates the significant therapeutic benefits of being outdoors and around plants, further emphasizing the trend toward creating enjoyment at home through outdoor spaces.”

Specifically, these trends include:

Yards for play. With the pandemic not over yet, many families are spending more time at home, so it’s important that they create healthful, organic spaces for children to play in. In keeping with the 2023 theme of enjoyment in the yard, parents want to create a yard that is not only beautiful, but fun and enriching for their kids in a way that keeps them off digital screens and engaged with nature.

Functional gardens. As families strive to eat healthier and inflation continues to bite into grocery budgets, more homeowners are expressing the desire to grow produce at home in a stylish way, often with raised gardening beds and greenhouses.

Outdoor spaces for wellness. Yardzen noted that its clients demonstrate an ever-increasing desire to use their yards for wellness, creating spaces devoted to relaxation and rejuvenation. Studies demonstrate that being outside is good for your health, and developing outdoor living areas adds additional square footage for dedicated wellness elements.

A renewed interest in siding. Yardzen has reported an increase in requests for exterior siding. Siding adds richness to a home’s facade and is a beautiful way to highlight architectural elements. Top siding requests include board and batten, stone and lap, all of which can transform the look and feel of a home.

Exterior design elements. As temperatures rise and droughts persist, homeowners are looking for stylish ways to make their houses cooler in the summer (and warmer in the winter). Customers are seeking unique architectural elements that will help them create pleasant and temperate spots in their homes and yards, including awnings, patios, canopies, patio covers and more.
