Your house’s siding is supposed to protect the interior from rain, snow, and temperature fluctuations. Siding can eventually wear out. If that happens, it may no longer be able to perform its job.
Here are some telltale signs that your home’s siding may need to be replaced.
- High Utility Costs: Siding should provide a barrier to protect your home from extreme outdoor temperatures and to keep heated or cooled air inside. If your utility bills have gone up significantly, old and damaged siding may be to blame. Before you start shopping for new siding, rule out other potential causes of increased utility costs, such as roof damage or insufficient or worn-out insulation.
- Water Damage: If water is trapped under the siding, you may see bubbles on the exterior. If moisture can get past the siding, it can damage the inside of the house. You may see signs of water damage, such as fungus, mold, mildew, peeling paint, or loose wallpaper, in living areas.
- Fading and Peeling: If your siding’s color has faded, that may be a sign that it is no longer able to protect your house from water. If the paint on your home’s siding keeps cracking, peeling, or chipping, that may indicate that the siding has reached the end of its lifespan and needs to be replaced.
- Other Exterior Damage: Use a screwdriver to poke the siding and the under layer and check for signs of rotting or warping. Siding that is rotted or warped needs to be replaced as soon as possible. Cracked or loose siding should be replaced because water can seep under it and damage the interior of your home. If you see pieces of siding that are cracked or loose, check to find out if the problem is limited to a small area or if it affects most of the house.
Holes in siding may be signs of insect damage. Insects can be a problem in and of themselves, and the holes they create can also allow moisture to get beneath the siding and cause further damage.
Dry rot is a fungus that can damage the majority of siding while leaving the outer layer intact. You may not realize that your siding has dry rot unless you tap on it with the handle of a screwdriver.
