How to Clean and Lubricate Vinyl Windows

The track and frame on vinyl windows can gradually become covered with dirt and grime. That can create friction that can make the windows difficult to open and close. Cleaning and lubricating vinyl windows can solve the problem. The process is fairly simple and straightforward and should be done at least once a year.

For horizontal windows, lift the windows at the base and compress the locking springs while you pull the windows out. If you have casement windows, slide them open. If your house has single- or double-hung windows, tilt them into the room.

Use a dry cloth to wipe the track and frame and remove loose dust and dirt. If there is any remaining debris, use a vacuum to get rid of it. Then mix a gallon of hot water with either 1 ½ cups of vinegar or 1 teaspoon of baby shampoo. Dampen a cloth with the solution and wipe away any built-up dirt, mold, or mildew. After you have finished cleaning, rinse the area with clean water and dry with a clean towel.

Remove the window sashes before lubricating the tracks. Use a silicone lubricant to make the windows easier to open and close. Spray some lubricant onto a dry cloth and wipe it onto the window track and jamb liner. It’s important that you not spray any lubricant directly onto a window because it can leave a greasy mess, and lubricant that gets on the glass can leave a permanent mark.

Don’t use a penetrating oil to lubricate your vinyl windows. That will only work for a short amount of time, and then the oil will attract dirt and dust, which can make the problem that you were trying to solve even worse than it was before.

Return the windows to their original position and open and close them a few times so that the lubricant is evenly distributed. If, after completing this process, the windows continue to stick, check to see if the weather stripping has been lifted or become damaged.
