Gutter storm damage is not always obvious from the ground. After high winds or heavy rain, walk around your house and look for gutters that sag, leak, hold standing water or no longer drain through the downspouts. Catching these problems early helps prevent water damage to the roof, the foundation and your yard.
How Storms Damage Gutters
A storm sends wet leaves, branches and other debris in every direction. Debris that lands in the gutters can stop water from draining. Strong wind and flying branches can also bend gutters, knock them out of position or pull them off the house. When that happens, the roof and other parts of the property can suffer serious water damage in the next rain.
Signs of Gutter Storm Damage
Loose or sagging gutters
Some problems are easy to see. Gutters that have come loose and are sagging or hanging off the house need to be fixed or replaced as soon as possible.
Holes and dents
Other damage takes a closer look. Falling branches and hail can leave holes or dents that cause gutters to leak.
Gutters knocked out of alignment
Gutters are set at a slight angle so water runs toward the downspout. A storm can change that angle. If the pitch is off, water backs up and overflows, which can damage the roof, the foundation and the landscaping. To test it, run water into the gutters with a garden hose. If it sits there, the alignment may have shifted.
Hidden clogs
Leaves and twigs blown onto the roof often end up in the gutters. Use the same hose test. If water does not flow through and come out the downspout, there is a clog somewhere. You may be able to pull out the debris and flush the gutters yourself, or you may need a professional to clean them and make repairs.
If the Gutters Need to Be Replaced
For gutters that are badly damaged, seamless aluminum is a popular replacement. Aluminum is lightweight, so it is less likely to sag than some other gutter materials. It resists rust and is affordable. Seamless gutters are made from long continuous sections instead of short pieces joined together, which reduces the risk of clogs.
Check the Rest of Your Exterior After a Storm
While you are walking around the house, look at everything else the storm could have reached. Check awning fabric and frames, door canopies and window awnings, railings on steps and decks, and the glass and frames of your storm doors.
Look at window sills and frames as well. Water stains or soft spots mean rain is getting in, and it may be time for vinyl replacement windows. Take photos of any damage in case you need them for an insurance claim.
