Retractable awnings work well in Guilford, CT, as long as they are chosen and used with shoreline weather in mind. Aladdin Inc installs custom retractable awnings for shoreline homes, and we help you pick a setup that handles wind and sea air.
Wind Is the Main Consideration
Homes near the water often see more wind than homes inland, and a retractable awning is not meant to stay open in strong gusts. That is why many shoreline homeowners choose a motorized retractable awning with a wind sensor. When the wind rises past the set level, the awning retracts on its own, even if nobody is home.
Salt Air and Upkeep
Salt in the air can leave a film on fabric and hardware. Rinsing the awning with fresh water from time to time and letting it dry before retracting it keeps it looking good and helps prevent mildew. Choosing a fabric color that does not show water spots easily also helps.
Shade With a View
A big advantage of a retractable awning over a fixed roof is that it rolls back completely. On a deck that looks out over the water or the marsh, you keep the open view when you do not need shade. We help you set the pitch and projection so the awning shades the seating area without blocking the sightline.
We are the area’s original Sunesta dealer, and Sunesta awnings carry the exclusive lifetime Sunesta warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I retract my awning before a storm?
Yes. Retract it in strong wind, heavy rain or snow. A wind sensor can do this automatically.
Is a retractable awning a good idea near the water?
Yes, with a wind sensor or a habit of retracting it when the wind picks up, and regular fresh-water rinsing.
Can I get side screens for low afternoon sun?
Retractable screens can block low sun from the side or front. Ask about them when we visit.
What warranty comes with the awning?
Sunesta awnings we install carry the exclusive lifetime Sunesta warranty. We go over the details when we give you a quote.
