Aladdin Inc installs retractable awnings for homeowners in North Haven, CT, from small deck awnings to wide patio covers that shade a whole outdoor dining area. Learn about sizes, fabrics and options on our retractable awnings page, then read on for what to think about before you order.
Start With How You Use the Space
Before choosing a size, think about when you are outside. If you eat dinner on the patio, the low western sun matters most, and a longer projection or a retractable screen may help. If you sit out in the morning, a smaller awning may be enough. We ask these questions when we visit so the awning is sized for the way you actually use the yard.
Size and Projection
Custom frames are available in widths up to 40 feet with projections up to 23 feet. Projection is how far the awning reaches out from the house, and it decides how much of the deck stays shaded as the sun moves. We measure the space and recommend a size and pitch that covers your table and seating without blocking the view.
Adding a Motor
For a larger awning, a motorized retractable awning is worth considering. It opens with a remote or wall switch, and a wind sensor can retract it automatically if the weather turns. For a small awning, a manual hand crank is often all you need.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far can a retractable awning extend?
Custom frames are available with projections up to 23 feet. The right projection depends on your deck and the height of the wall it mounts on.
Can I add side shade later?
Retractable screens can block low sun from the side or front. Ask about them when we visit.
How do I keep the fabric clean?
Rinse it with water now and then and let it dry fully before retracting it. Mild soap works for heavier dirt.
Do I need a permit for an awning in North Haven?
Requirements vary by town and by project. We can tell you what applies to your address when we visit, and you can confirm with the town building department.
